Shields to be Opening Day Starter
Rays manager Joe Maddon surprised reporters Wednesday afternoon by announcing that James Shields will be the Rays’ Opening Day starter April 6 in Boston.
Maddon said Shields’ work the past two seasons earned the right-hander the honor.
Scott Kazmir is slotted to start the Rays’ second game, April 8 at Boston, and will be followed by Matt Garza and Andy Sonnanstine.

Julia – Let’s hope it not that cold. who wants to freeze their butt off at a game? Not that weather would stop die hard fans from going!
Bill – Where was the surprise in that announcement? Josh Beckett will most likely get the ball for Boston, and the Rays usually put Shields against him.
After all putting Kaz against Beckett would make Opening Day absolutely PERFECT for me…so they couldn’t possibly do that! But I can still dream……

Big Game James is beginning to become a big thorn in the Boston Red Sox foot.
If he does match up against Josh Beckett, it will be our first look at one of the top matchups of the year for both teams. I wonder which Beckett will show up……….either mr healthy, or the elbow pain weary one.
