Upton Not Starting

B.J. Upton won’t start tonight’s game because of the effects of having a virus, which he started to feel during Wednesday night’s game.

Upton is still available for duty, but Rays manager Joe Maddon is concerned about his center fielder getting dehydrated and possibly pulling a muscle.

When are we going to have a real leadoff hitter? Upton has done a lot for the team, but his lack of getting on is hurting the team. Maddon’s reluctance to take a player down is an admirable thing and is probably in part responsible for the Rays’ success. Leaving him in lead off with him hitting less than 200 and Bartlet hitting over 300 30 games into the season is overdoing it. If Upton can’t handle batting 7th or 8th until he gets on track, then he’s the problem. How many more games could we have won with more runners on ahead of Crawford, Longone and Pena?
