Maddon Still Looking to Split the Catching

Joe Maddon talked about the Rays’ catching situation on Tuesday and stuck with the same scenario he painted prior to Spring Training: Kelly Shoppach and Dioner Navarro will split the duty.

What kind of split they have will be determined on a game-by-game, series-by-series, basis.

“We’ve got one really good catcher between these two guys and they’re also one really good catcher individually,” Maddon said. “I’m just going to wait. It’s going to be based on who’s pitching for the other team. Shoppach more versus lefties and Navvy more versus righties. You would think. But Shop’s starting to hit some righties pretty good. We’ve really worked hard on his approach. On the other hand, Navvy’s done a lot of good work left-handed with [hitting coach Derek Shelton]. And it’s starting to look good, too.”
