Carl Crawford has been scratched from the Rays’ starting lineup for Friday night’s game against the Red Sox.

The Rays left-fielder had been penciled in to play left field and hit third in the order, but at approximately 6:44 the Rays announced the change.

According to the Rays, Crawford came down with a stomach virus.

No matter what Jeremy Hellickson does tonight in his fourth Major League start, expect to see the right-hander make a return trip to Triple-A Durham afterward.

With Jeff Niemann and Wade Davis set to return from the disabled list, the Rays won’t have a spot for Hellickson in the rotation and they are reluctant to put him in the bullpen since he has not pitched there before. They also are monitoring the number of innings he throws.

Will Hellickson be back in September? Probably. But I don’t expect him to be pitching out of the bullpen if the Rays make the playoffs either.

Jeremy Hellickson just arrived to the Rays’ clubhouse and, according to the right-hander, is scheduled to start Tuesday night’s game against the Tigers.

Hellickson, who picked up a win in his Major League debut a week ago against the Twins, had to be recalled because Wade Davis, the Rays’ scheduled starter, had to return to St. Petersburg to have his right shoulder examined.
