Three Errors in an Inning

The Rays just tied a team record with three errors in one inning in the second; it has has happened six other times in team history.

The last time the Rays committed three errors in an inning was July 2, 2007 in the eighth inning at a game in Cleveland.

Hideki Matsui will travel to Toronto this weekend to obtain his visa. Although nothing is confirmed, it is anticipated that sometime Tuesday he will arrive in Durham to begin playing for Triple-A Durham.

Due to the uncertainty of his arrival time, it is not known if he will play in the Bulls’ game that night.

Matsui, who recently a Minor League deal with the Rays on April 30, was 8-for-18 at extended Spring Training, including a home run on Saturday.

Lobaton and Matsui latest

Catcher Jose Lobaton, who has been recovering from a right-shoulder problem, has moved on to Single-A Charlotte where he will begin a rehab assignment Saturday with the Stone Crabs.

Meanwhile, Hideki Matsui went 2-for-4 with a walk in an extended Spring Training game on Friday. He also played left field.

The Rays worked out on Field 5 at Charlotte Sports Park prior to Saturday’s game against the Red Sox. Aside from the batting practice there were a couple of interesting stories going on.

First was Reid Brignac hosting T.J. Andrews. Andrews, 11, met Brignac at Tampa General Hospital when Andrews was recovering from an explosion that cost him four fingers from his dominant left hand. Since that first meeting Andrews and Brignac have remained friends. Andrews and his mother, Toka, drove to Port Charlotte from Climax, Ga. on Friday to spend the weekend with Brignac and the Rays. Sunday will be the one-year anniversary of Andrews’ accident.

Also seen on Field 5 was Joe Maddon standing at the batting cage wearing cutoff baseball pants. The workout was to have been in shorts, but the Rays manager opted for his baseball pants. James Shields remedied the situation by cutting off the skipper’s pants.

The Rays experienced a scary moment in the ninth inning when Fernando Rodney took a shot off his right forearm and had to leave the game.

Pittsburgh’s Alex Presley lined a single back at Rodney and the ball ricocheted off Rodney’s forearm. Rodney left the game to be examined by the Rays trainers, who reported that Rodney had a right forearm contusion and is OK.
