Odds and Ends

Scott Kazmir made his first start of the spring and allowed a run on three hits while striking out one in two innings worked against the Twins. The southpaw threw 33 pitches and looked healthy on the mound.

Grant Balfour’s right arm is black and blue with stitch marks from where a drive hit by Boston’s Nick Green struck him in Saturday’s game. Balfour was scheduled to pitch Tuesday, but has been moved back to Thursday. The Australian native still maintained a little bounce in his step Monday after Australia’s 17-7 win over Mexico in the World Baseball Classic.

The Rays announced that Brad Matthews has been named the Rays Scout of the Year and Xavier Hernandez the Player Development Man of the Year.

Finally, the Rays Golf Tournament scheduled for Wednesday at The Ritz Carlton Members Club in Bradenton is sold out; the tournament benefits the Rays Baseball Foundation.

Starters to Begin Pitching Saturday

James Shields will be the Rays’ first starter of their top four to start a spring game when he goes against the Red Sox Saturday in Port Charlotte.

Wade Davis will make Sunday’s road trip to Fort Myers to start against the Red Sox then Scott Kazmir will start Monday against the Twins at home. On Tuesday the Rays will roll out Matt Garza, Andy Sonnanstine, and David Price against the Blue Jays at home.

Shields to be Opening Day Starter

Rays manager Joe Maddon surprised reporters Wednesday afternoon by announcing that James Shields will be the Rays’ Opening Day starter April 6 in Boston.

Maddon said Shields’ work the past two seasons earned the right-hander the honor.

Scott Kazmir is slotted to start the Rays’ second game, April 8 at Boston, and will be followed by Matt Garza and Andy Sonnanstine.
