Manny Ramirez hit his first home run of the spring when he ran into a David Riske pitch with one out in the sixth and deposited the baseball over the wall just left of the Batter’s Eye at Ed Smith Stadium.
Not to be outdone, the next batter, B.J. Upton, followed suit when he hit one that took the same flight path as Ramirez’s, it just flew farther.
The Rays still trail 10-4.
Monday’s large crowd for the Rays’ first workout could partially be attributed to the fact it was Presidents Day, but the presence of Manny Ramirez and Johnny Damon had a lot to do with people wanting to show up on their day off.
The crowd could be heard yelling the names of both of the icons throughout the workout and both responded graciously, often talking with the crowd and signing autographs.
In short, if you’re a Rays fan, seeing Ramirez and Damon in Rays uniforms had to feel pretty good.
The smell of smoke is lingering over the Charlotte Sports Complex as pitchers and catchers prepare for the first workout of spring. I don’t know if the smell is leftover from yesterday when a wildfire blazed west of the stadium, or if there has been additional fires.
Meanwhile, principal owner Stu Sternberg is in Port Charlotte and Manny Ramirez just walked by. Should be an interesting day.
